Exercise and Altruism

Give me five minutes of your time. Give me that and I'm sure you'll take something from this column.

QUESTION #1: Are you virtuous? Define virtue. Go ahead, I dare you to sum up "virtue's" essence in one sentence. I'll give you a moment...

QUESTION #2: What does Question #1 have to do with health and fitness?

I'll answer Question #2. Being virtuous can prolong your life.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, scientific studies are proving that being kind and considerate to others gives you bonus points with Father Time.

These recent studies give the evidence: Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan; the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine; the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love; and, Dr. Esther Sternberg, author of "The Balance Within: The Science Connecting Health and Emotions." Each of these studies show that it is better to give than to receive; altruism is better than selfishness; selflessness is better than self-centeredness.

How does this make us more fit? In every way, that's how. Our current Governor, a multiple Mr. Olympia and probably the famous bodybuilder ever, used to say that shaping your body is 90% mental and 10% physical.

Social awareness. Giving your time. Opening your heart. These virtues, prove these four studies, release endorphins. This specific biological pathway connects the brain and the immune system, and the stress hormone cortisol dissipates allowing immune cells to fight bacteria and viruses.

Turns out helping others helps you. That's what the love institute says. They spent $1.7 million researching altruism. Keep the money and I'll tell you that being nice pays off. Kindness matters. To you and to me.

So, here's my new diet plan for you: For every pound you want to lose demonstrate five virtuous acts a day. In the gym, you can help someone restack their weights. You can wipe down a bench after using it. Tell the staff they're doing a good job. Leave a complimentary note to the gym owner. Leave your cell phone in the locker.

Feel the rush, what's called "helper's high." Your racing slow down and you'll appreciate more.

Virtue. How do you define it?

Be fit and healthy in every way you can.
